Punch Excision to Get Rid of Boxcar and Ice Pick Acne Scars
Punch excision is an acne scar remedy that is normally performed on more severe types of acne scarring such as ice pick scars and boxcar scars. Ice pick scars are narrow and deep as if a miniature ice pick has been drilled into the skin. They are usually narrow and deep enough to affect both the dermis and the subcutaneous layers of the skin.
Boxcar scars are rounder or more box like depressions that have sharp vertical edges. They are wider in diameter and tend to be less deep than an ice pick scar, although some can be quite deep also.
Punch Excision
This is a form of surgical procedure to treat ice pick and deep boxcar scars. The surgeon will select one or various punch biopsy tools to match the size of your scars, and the scars are then removed with this tool. The skin is pulled back together through stitching and the tiny scar left from this procedure quickly heals and fades with time.
The excision tool gives the physician the ability to match, remove and minimize wide scars. The method improves the way scars look by surgically changing their size, depth, or color. However, this is still a surgical procedure and there will be other, albeit smaller and less obvious scars left behind. With time, the appearance of these tiny scars will fade. The essential thing is that the deep ugly scars have been removed giving the skin a smoother appearance.
This is a surgical technique reserved for wide, pitted, or deeply depressed scars. The aim is to improve the appearance of scars that have healed abnormally or in irregular patterns or shapes.
After the surgery, there may be some residual bruising that will take time to heal. The area should be protected from the sun and you should take care not to stretch the tissue while it is healing. Your physician may also advise on special ways to cleanse the skin to aid the healing process. It is essential especially a week after the procedure, to follow instructions and take extra care to prevent the appearance of new scars.
You may also wish to combine laser treatment with punch excision procedures for maximum acne scar removal. Remember that punch excision treatments depend on the type of scars and can be quite an aggresive and expensive type of treatment.
Find out more by speaking with your dermatologist. It may be that you will need a small amount done to some of the deeper wider scars, and other less aggressive types of treatment could be used on other areas.
